OVERDRIVE vs Fog of World: a fog-of-war map made for driving

One app reveals the whole world as you travel through it. The other is only interested in the roads you drive.

By OVERDRIVE · Published October 11, 2026 · Facts checked October 11, 2026 · Prices updated October 16, 2026

Short answer: Fog of World is the original fog-of-war map for real life: since 2012 it has recorded everywhere you go and cleared the fog where you have been, with badges, levels and visit percentages by country. OVERDRIVE takes the same idea and applies it only to driving: your city starts dark, each road you drive is painted onto your map and snapped to the street, and curated zones, daily challenges, crews and a smoothness score are built around it. Choose Fog of World for a lifetime travel record; choose OVERDRIVE if driving is the point.

What Fog of World does better

What OVERDRIVE does differently

What "fog of war" means here

In strategy games, fog of war hides any part of the map you have not explored. Fog of World made that idea work on a real-world map. OVERDRIVE uses a driving version of it: the map of your city starts dark and only the roads you drive light up. The difference is the unit. Fog clears in areas; OVERDRIVE paints roads.

Can you use both?

Yes. Many people want both a lifetime travel map and a driving game. Running both during a drive means two apps reading GPS, so expect extra battery use.

OVERDRIVE is free to download and your first two drives are free. After that, OVERDRIVE Pro costs $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year in the US (prices vary by country), or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99 until 31 October 2026, then $49.99). The annual and monthly plans include a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers; the weekly plan has none. The price and any trial are shown in the app before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Fog of World for driving?

Yes. OVERDRIVE is a fog-of-war-style map made only for driving: your city starts dark and every road you drive is painted onto your map on iPhone, with zones, daily challenges and crews. Fog of World itself also records drives, along with everywhere else you travel.

Does Fog of World work in a car?

Its listing says it records your tracks and maps your travel, including in the background, so it records drives along with every other kind of journey. It clears fog by area rather than drawing individual roads.

Can OVERDRIVE import my Fog of World or GPX history?

No. OVERDRIVE starts your map from your first drive with the app. Fog of World can import GPX and KML.

Which is better for privacy?

Both keep your history on the device by default. Fog of World has no user accounts and syncs to your own cloud. OVERDRIVE stores drives on the iPhone and uses an anonymous account, with no email or password, for the online features. With Snap to Roads on (the default), a finished drive's points are sent to a map-matching service; you can switch that off.

Does OVERDRIVE work outside the US and on road trips?

Yes. It paints roads you drive anywhere on earth, and a road trip paints every road along the way. It also ships with 2,206 curated zones in 230 cities across 53 countries, and shows an estimated discovery percentage for each of those cities.

Is OVERDRIVE on Android or CarPlay?

No. OVERDRIVE is an iPhone app (iOS 16.4 or later). There is no Android version and no CarPlay app.

How much does OVERDRIVE cost?

OVERDRIVE is free to download and your first two drives are free. After that, OVERDRIVE Pro costs $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year in the US (prices vary by country), or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99 until 31 October 2026, then $49.99). The annual and monthly plans include a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers; the weekly plan has none. The price and any trial are shown in the app before you pay.
