Apps that color in every road you've driven: 8 options compared (2026)

Eight apps that turn where you have been into a map, what each one is actually built for, and which to pick for driving.

Short answer: For an iPhone app that colors (or colours) in the roads you've driven by car, the main choices in October 2026 are OVERDRIVE (paints each road onto a dark city map, adds curated zones and challenges, scores smoothness and never speed), Open Road (an automatic drive tracker with a map of every road, on iPhone and Android), DriveTracker (a driving log with reports and CSV export) and Fog of World (a fog-of-war map of everywhere you travel, since 2012). TravelMapping suits highway clinchers. Wandrer and CityStrides do the same job for cycling, running and walking, not driving.

How we compared

We read each app's current App Store listing and, where it has one, its own website, and took ratings, prices, platforms and languages from Apple's public app data on 11 October 2026. We did not test competitors' accuracy or battery use, so nothing here ranks them on quality. We also left out apps that track speed, mileage for tax, or fleet vehicles, since they answer a different question. FOWIRL, another small fog-of-war app whose listing mentions driving cross-country, was last updated in February 2025.

OVERDRIVE is free to download and your first two drives are free. After that, OVERDRIVE Pro costs $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year in the US (prices vary by country), or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99 until 31 October 2026, then $49.99). The annual and monthly plans include a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers; the weekly plan has none. The price and any trial are shown in the app before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that colors in the roads you've driven?

Yes. OVERDRIVE paints every road you drive onto your own map on iPhone, starting from a dark city. Open Road and DriveTracker also keep a map of roads driven, and Fog of World clears fog wherever you have travelled.

Which apps record drives automatically?

Open Road's listing says it starts on its own. DriveTracker's listing says every road you drive "gets recorded automatically" and offers Siri and widget controls to start and stop. In OVERDRIVE you start each drive while parked, and it then records hands-free; with the optional Background Recording setting it keeps going with the screen off.

Is there a free app that shows every road I've driven?

Open Road says its core app is free, DriveTracker and TravelMapping are free downloads, and FogMap has a free download with a paid unlock. OVERDRIVE is free to download with the first two drives free, then needs OVERDRIVE Pro: a subscription or a one-time Lifetime purchase.

Can any of these import my old location history?

Fog of World can import GPX and KML tracks. OVERDRIVE cannot import past trips; it maps drives from the day you start using it.

Which app is best for road trips?

For a painted map of every road on the trip plus curated zones in 230 cities, OVERDRIVE. For counting highways you have clinched end to end, TravelMapping. For a record that also covers flights and walks, Fog of World.

Is there a Wandrer or CityStrides for driving?

Wandrer counts bike and foot activities and CityStrides counts running and walking. For driving, OVERDRIVE applies the same new-roads idea to a car. See our guide: Is there a Wandrer for cars?

Is OVERDRIVE on Android or CarPlay?

No. OVERDRIVE is an iPhone app (iOS 16.4 or later). There is no Android version and no CarPlay app.

How much does OVERDRIVE cost?

OVERDRIVE is free to download and your first two drives are free. After that, OVERDRIVE Pro costs $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year in the US (prices vary by country), or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99 until 31 October 2026, then $49.99). The annual and monthly plans include a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers; the weekly plan has none. The price and any trial are shown in the app before you pay.
