Is there a Wandrer for cars? Counting the new roads you drive
Wandrer made new roads into points for cyclists and walkers. What changes when you try the same thing in a car.

Short answer: Wandrer doesn't count drives. Its FAQ lists bike and foot activities only and says "You can travel by bicycle or on foot." If you want the same new-roads idea for a car, OVERDRIVE is an iPhone app that paints every road you drive onto your own map, shows an estimated share of each city you've discovered, and adds curated zones, daily challenges and crews. It rewards smooth driving and never speed.

How Wandrer works
Wandrer calls itself "an exploration game where you win by going to new places". According to its FAQ, it scores the number of unique roads you travel, using OpenStreetMap data for bike- and foot-accessible roads and trails, and gives bonuses when you reach 25, 50, 75, 90 and 99% of the roads in an achievement area. It reads activities from Strava, Garmin or RideWithGPS, and in September 2026 it released an iPhone app that records activities too. A free account syncs 50 past activities; Wandrer Extra costs $40 a year.
The activity types it counts are rides, e-bike rides, handcycles and velomobiles on the bike side, and hikes, walks, runs, snowshoeing, wheelchair and Nordic skiing on foot. Driving is not on the list.

| Explorer achievement areas with bonuses at set percentages | Discovery milestones at 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of a city, and 2,206 curated zones in 230 cities |

What is different, honestly
- How the percentage is measured. Wandrer scores against the OpenStreetMap road network. OVERDRIVE's city percentage is an estimate based on 250-metre squares within about 16 km of the city centre, so treat it as progress, not a survey. The painted lines on the map show exactly which streets you have driven.
- What counts. Wandrer is for human-powered travel. OVERDRIVE is for driving: car, motorcycle, scooter, electric or van, with a passenger mode that paints the map without scoring.
- How it records. Wandrer can use the GPS device you already train with. In OVERDRIVE you start each drive on your iPhone while parked.
- What it rewards. OVERDRIVE adds a flow score for how smoothly you drove. It never scores speed.
Why a car changes the game
On a bike, a new road is mostly a question of legs and time. In a car the limits are different: one-way systems, private and gated roads, motorways you can only join in one place, and residential streets where cruising up and down at night is unwelcome. A good driving version should send you somewhere worth going rather than every cul-de-sac in turn. That is the job of OVERDRIVE's zones: a scenic climb, a coastal road, a neighbourhood worth weaving through. Read how to drive every street in your city for a practical approach.
Already a Wandrer? Use both
If you ride or walk with Wandrer, keep it for that. OVERDRIVE covers the miles you drive, which Wandrer does not count, and the two never compete for the same activity.
OVERDRIVE is free to download and your first two drives are free. After that, OVERDRIVE Pro costs $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year in the US (prices vary by country), or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99 until 31 October 2026, then $49.99). The annual and monthly plans include a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers; the weekly plan has none. The price and any trial are shown in the app before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Does Wandrer count driving?
No. Wandrer's FAQ lists bike activities (ride, e-bike ride, handcycle, velomobile) and foot activities (hike, walk, run, snowshoe, wheelchair, Nordic ski), and says you can travel by bicycle or on foot.
Is there a Wandrer alternative for cars?
OVERDRIVE applies the same new-roads idea to driving on iPhone: it paints each road you drive onto your map, estimates how much of each city you have discovered, and adds zones, daily challenges and crews.
Is there a CityStrides for driving?
CityStrides is built for running and walking. For a car, OVERDRIVE is the closest equivalent we know of. See how to drive every street in your city.
How does OVERDRIVE calculate how much of a city I've discovered?
It counts the 250-metre squares your drives have passed through within about 16 km of the city centre, against an estimate of how many of those squares are drivable. The result is an estimate. The painted map shows the exact roads.
Can I import my Strava or Wandrer activities into OVERDRIVE?
No. OVERDRIVE only maps drives recorded with the app.
Does driving faster give a higher score in OVERDRIVE?
No. Speed and drifting are never scored, ranked or rewarded. Drives are scored on flow, which measures smoothness, and there is no lap timer, no speed leaderboard and no drift scoring anywhere in the app.
