A driving app that scores smooth driving, not speed
How OVERDRIVE scores a drive without ever looking at how fast you went, and what that changes.

Short answer: OVERDRIVE (iPhone) gives every drive a flow score for smoothness: steady pace, gentle braking and a clean line, measured with GPS and the phone's motion sensor and hidden while the car is moving. Driving faster cannot raise it, and there are no speed or drift leaderboards. Flow sits alongside a map that paints every road you drive, so the game is exploring and driving well, not driving fast.

What flow measures
Flow watches how steady your pace is and how gentle your inputs are, using GPS and the accelerometer. A calm, clean line scores high. Harsh braking and jumpy throttle score low. It is tuned to the vehicle you choose (car, motorcycle, scooter, electric, or van/SUV), so a van is not penalised for moving like a van.
- Revealed after you park. The number is hidden while the car is moving and only shows when you are stopped; the full score appears in the summary.
- Not affected by speed. Driving faster cannot raise it. There is no speed leaderboard, no lap timer and no drift scoring.
- Passenger mode paints the map without scoring, for when you are not the one driving.
- Low-power mode uses coarser GPS and no motion sensor to save battery on long drives, so flow is approximate in that mode.
Three kinds of driving score
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Insurance telematics | Speed and drive trackers | OVERDRIVE flow | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made for | Pricing your insurance | Treating the drive as a sport | Driving well while exploring your map |
| Typically measures | Miles, time of day, location, rapid acceleration, hard braking and cornering (NAIC) | Top speed, g-force, timed segments (for example Open Road) | Steadiness of pace and gentleness of inputs |
| Who sees it | Your insurer | You, and boards or feeds in the app | You. Your best flow appears on your public driver card only if you choose to show your numbers. |
| Speed | Can count against you | Often a headline stat | Never scored, ranked or rewarded |
OVERDRIVE is not an insurance product and is not connected to any insurer.
Is there a "Strava for driving" that doesn't rank speed?
Strava-style driving apps usually borrow segments: a stretch of road, timed on every pass, with a best time to beat. That is a natural fit for running and cycling and a poor one for public roads. OVERDRIVE keeps the parts of that model that work in a car (a record of every drive, progress over time, friends and boards) and replaces the timer with discovery and smoothness. The boards rank distance, and driver cards show distance and flow, never speed.
How to drive with more flow
- Look further ahead, so you can lift off early instead of braking late.
- Leave more space to the car in front; it gives you room to slow down gently.
- Squeeze the brake on and ease it off as you stop.
- Pick a steady pace with the traffic and hold it, rather than surging between gaps.
- Turn smoothly at a sensible speed instead of braking in the middle of a bend.
None of these needs you to go faster. Flow zones in OVERDRIVE, 566 of them across 230 cities, are long, smooth roads chosen for exactly this kind of driving, such as the Embankment in London or Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.

OVERDRIVE is free to download and your first two drives are free. After that, OVERDRIVE Pro costs $3.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year in the US (prices vary by country), or a one-time Lifetime purchase ($29.99 until 31 October 2026, then $49.99). The annual and monthly plans include a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers; the weekly plan has none. The price and any trial are shown in the app before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app that scores smooth driving instead of speed?
Yes. OVERDRIVE for iPhone scores each drive on flow, a measure of smoothness, and never scores or ranks speed.
Does the flow score use my speed at all?
Flow looks at how steady your pace is and how gentle your braking and acceleration are, not at how fast you go. Driving faster cannot raise it.
Can I see my flow score while driving?
No. It is hidden while the car is moving and only shows when you are stopped, with the full score in the summary after you park, so there is nothing to watch on screen while you drive.
Is OVERDRIVE an insurance or telematics app?
No. It is not connected to any insurer, and the score is for you and, if you choose, your friends.
Does flow work on a motorcycle?
Yes. Choose motorcycle as your vehicle and flow is tuned to how a bike moves. Scooter, electric and van/SUV are also options.
Is there a Strava for driving without speed rankings?
OVERDRIVE keeps a record of every drive, progress, friends and boards, but ranks distance instead of times, and scores smoothness instead of speed.
